Establishment of the California HIV/AIDS Research Program

In 1983 the Legislature of the State of California determined to augment the University of California's research budget to provide for the solicitation and support of meritorious research projects related to AIDS at nonprofit institutions within California. The University of California's Universitywide AIDS Research Program (UARP) was established to administer and coordinate all aspects of the application and funding process. Renamed CHRP in 2007, the program continues to support excellent, timely and innovative research in basic, clinical, social/behavioral and epidemiologic sciences through research awards, collaborative agreements with the State Office of AIDS, and special initiatives.

To accomplish its mission, the program established an umbrella
of mechanisms to support HIV/AIDS research in California.
In addition to the administration of investigator-initiated
awards, institutional awards, targeted research award
and training awards (visit Research
and Training Awards), the program manages a number of special
initiatives, which support a broad range of research
activities, and allow flexibility to be attentive to the
changing needs of HIV researchers in California (see also
Funding Partnerships).
CHRP communicates the findings of its funded research
to the public through a
variety of mechanisms: the annual report, the bi-annual
Conference on AIDS Research in California, and various
publications.

CHRP is a part of the Special Research Programs under
the Vice-President for Health Affairs in the University
of California Office of the President. For more information
